Hatchery donation

Summer Student Mitchell Currie was hired to work at the Oyster River Enhancement Hatchery. L to R: Frank Petruzelka, Oyster River Hatchery Manager, Mitchell, Jim Loring, ORES president, Mackenzie Leine representing Island Timberlands, and Domenico Iannidinardo representing TimberWest.

The Oyster River Enhancement Society (ORES) has hired student Mitchell Currie for summer employment at the Oyster River Hatchery. This was facilitated through a generous partnership with TimberWest and Island Timberlands to fund this project. In the past both companies have given ORES help with donations of seedling trees and grass seed for enhancement of side channels.

ORES, TimberWest, and Island Timberlands are members of the Oyster River Watershed Management Committee (ORWMC). Other members include Comox Valley Regional district, Mount Washington Resort, BC Ministry of the Environment, Federal Dept of Fisheries and Oceans and interested public citizens. This committee meets on a quarterly basis to discuss watershed issues and the two Forestry companies are valued stakeholders in the upper Oyster river system. Through regular dialogue and field trips, they impart to the group their plans and actions on their land holdings. Support of ORES in their efforts shows their interest in long term stewardship of this valuable resource.

ORES Has A Brand New Website

06 May 09, 06:05:00

Be the first to explore the brand new website that the Oyster River Enhancement Society has launched. Once you are there you can view who we are, what we do and find out how you can get involved. There are full details on finding the salmon hatchery and contact information for emails. We are always looking for sponsors. You should know that your sponsorship is maximized by our exceptional volunteers and dedicated membership.

The Oyster River Enhancement Society (ORES) was formed in 1983 by a small group of concerned citizens in an attempt to revitalize the decimated Oyster River. Since it's inception, the membership has grown significantly and now members come from all over the Regional District and beyond. Volunteers have made this society what it is today with thousands of hours of combined effort. The river now has healthy salmon and trout runs each year.
